View from the chair

Welcome everyone to The Lane for only our third home league game of 2024/25 when we embark on step 5 football for the first time in our 103-year history. The end of last season seems a long time ago now but it is hard to forget a last-minute winner from Brad Empson that gets you promoted in a play-off final and I am sure everyone remembers the wild celebrations.

Huge Congratulations must go to our manager Ryan Wade, his coaching team and the players for a remarkable season where we won lots of friends with our style of play as well as a lot of games. On a personal note, I am delighted to see so many of last year’s team remain, welcome to the new players that have joined and we look forward to seeing what the season brings. Also, a huge welcome to Lee Protheroe who joined us as 1st team coach and Steph Symeou who joins as Physio and both have fitted in to Ryan’s management team really well alongside assistant manager Tony Faulkner.

After being on the road in the league for three games last Saturday saw us back home and welcoming Irchester United in the Ernest Gladwish trophy and although we came out on top 3-2 we were trailing at half time to two goals in the dying seconds of the first half. Credit to the players for the more clinical second half performance which saw Ibs Kehinde bag his first hat trick for the club to see us progress to the next round.

A particular warm welcome to the players officials and supporters of Shefford Town & Campton who we play for the first time in our history today and we welcome them to a nearly completely refurbished clubhouse, just a few bits of snagging left to do and we hope you enjoy your visit today. They have had a tough start to the season and we wish them well for the remainder of it

Hope you enjoy the game and thanks for your support. COYW.

Welcome to our opponents

Shefford Town & Campton Football Club (The Bluemen) are based in the town of Shefford, Bedfordshire. The team plays its home matches at Shefford Sports Club on Hitchin Road in Shefford and at Campton Playing Fields, Rectory Road in Campton. The club is competing at the 10th tier of the English football league system in the Spartan South Midlands Football League Division One. The club also has a reserve side competing in Premier Division of the Bedfordshire County Football League and u23 and development teams appearing in the same league structure

Originally formed in 1910 as Shefford Town, their first successful period came in the 1950s: starting in 1949–50, the team won two South Midlands League championships and three Beds Senior Cups within five seasons. Subsequently, the club finished as runners-up in the Parthenon League, and won the United Counties League title in 1960–61. Shefford would not match these achievements until the early 1980s, when the club was promoted from the South Midlands League’s second tier in 1982–83 and won the league title a year later.

After relegation in 1990, Shefford Town folded in 1994. The town remained without a senior football team until 2009, when the club was reformed. In 2010 Shefford Town merged with near neighbours Campton.

The club has had success both on and off the pitch in recent years since its reformation, the club were crowned Bedfordshire County Premier Division Winners in 2011–12 under the managment of Graham Earl , and in 2017–18 and 2018–19 under the management of Scott Grant & Dan ‘Checker’ Gauntlett. The Bedfordshire County League Britannia Cup was won in both 2011 & 2014, 2019 and the East Beds Charity Cup was won by the Reserve team in 2015. The Club has also finished runners up in the Biggleswade knock-out cup in 2015, 2016 & 2017.

At the end of 2018–19 season Shefford announced its intentions to seek promotion into the Spartan South Midlands Football League, they duly wrapped up the Bedfordshire County League title and passed the relevant ground grading, so the club stepped back into the league it folded out of back in 1994. Our debut season in the Spartan saw us null and voided three quarters through the campaign and with it the end of the tenure of successful management duo of Grant & Gauntlett. Assistant Manager Kane Dougherty was promoted from within the club to take the reigns for the 20/21 season.

Under the Stewardship of Kane Dougherty and James Taylor the club topped division 1 during the curtailed season of 20/21 and finally guided us to promotion via the playoffs during the 21/22 season.

At the end of the 23/24 season and after a 3rd from bottom finish, Kane stepped down as 1st team manager to focus on his business and his family. His Assistant Manager Jim Starling has stepped into the breach for the 24/25 season and is ably assisted by Ryan Nicholl and Sam Vladimirov.
