Spartan South Midlands Football League, Premier Division

Date: 29 November 2025

Kickoff: 15:00

View from the chair

Welcome everyone to today’s league game vs Tring Athletic and a particularly warm welcome to all the players, officials and supporters of Tring Athletic a team we had some great games against last season. This season hasn’t seen either team hit the heights of last year but I am sure it will be a fully committed contest from two teams who on their day can beat anyone in this league.
last Saturday saw us lose 1-0 to Harlow Town in a very close contest in shocking weather conditions and in all honesty a 0-0 draw probably would have been the right result as despite both teams working really hard neither goalkeeper had much to do.
Ryan and the management team are still working hard to add to the squad and there are still additions being signed almost weekly at the moment.
Thanks to our sponsors ALM, Harrison Hayes and all of our pitch side sponsors for their support.
Hope you enjoy the game COYW

Welcome to our opponents

THE EARLY YEARS
Tring Athletic Youth FC was formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed towards the purchase of 3.4 acres at Miswell Lane in Tring. The cost of providing changing rooms, fencing, equipment and ownership of the ground was approximately £2,000, a lot of money in those days. Originally the Club was formed to provide football for youngsters aged under 21 and despite playing against adult teams, won many trophies in the West Herts Saturday League during the early 1960’s including the Division 1 title 3 times in 5 years.

SOUTH MIDLANDS FOOTBALL LEAGUE
In 1988 we joined the South Midlands and as a result gained senior status with the Herts FA. We established ourselves in the South Midlands by gaining promotion to the newly formed Senior Division in 1993.  In the subsequent 16 years, we won many trophies and cups and established ourselves as one of the premier teams in the league.

SEASON 2004/05 – A new season, a new division at a new ground in Cow Lane, Tring, with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in the Premier Division and also won the St Mary’s Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the FA Vase for the first time.

Some highlights

SEASON 2010/11 – The First team finished in its then highest position, runners up to Chalfont St Peter in the SSMFL Premier Division. They also won the St. Mary’s Cup for the fifth time, defeating Leverstock Green 2-1 after extra time.

SEASON 2018/19: The First Team were runners up in SSMFL Premier Division and happily, the Reserves were Suburban Football League Central Division Champions and the “A” Team were Herts Junior Cup Winners and West Herts Senior Cup Finalists.

SEASON 2021/22.  We began this season with a new management team, headed by Ryan Sturges and Lee Groves, both former players at the Club.  The covid pandemic provided us with the opportunity to complete a number of behind-the-scenes projects including installing new floodlights and re-furbishing the clubhouse.   Our victory in the Premier Division Cup Final was just reward for the players and for the behind the scenes group.

SEASON 2022/23.  We finish ninth in the league, whilst the highlight of the season was our unprecedented run in the FA Vase competition, losing only narrowly in the fifth round to Bury.

SEASON 2023/24.  Tring had a great second half of the season and finally finished 6th, just one position shy of a play off place.  We win the Herts Charity Shield, beating Oxhey Jets in the final.  Our midweek U18 side win the Southern Counties Youth League, unbeaten during the season and with a great FA Youth Cup run to cap it off.

SEASON 2024/25. Tring are represented by 5 teams with the U18 team again being very successful losing only 1 match in the season.  However, pride of place goes to the 1st team who enjoyed their best ever season.  We finished 2nd in the league and celebrated with victories in two cups – the Herts Charity Shield and the league’s Gladwish Trophy and appearing as finalists in the St. Mary’s Cup.

SEASON 2025/2026 Onwards and upwards for all!
