Men's First Team

FA Cup Journey Ends Early

Another first for the club as we played in the FA Cup for the first time and headed away into Essex to face Heybridge Sifts a step 4 side.
A number of defenders were missing through holidays and a wedding abroad but the lads who stepped up had a solid first half however a high press from our opponents created a number of chances for them.
We defended corners well and looked dangerous going forward, a magnificent run from Kaidyn saw him dribble past four players and pull the ball back for Zion to smash home from six yards. 32 mins gone.
Zion the history maker as first ever goal scored for WRFC in the FA Cup.
We saw the half out and looked comfortable and even had a couple of half chances to increase our lead.
Half time 1-0 to the Worms.
Our opponents started the second half strongly and we found ourselves penned in our own half, a couple of substitutions from them seemed to improve them more and the equaliser was no real surprise, good cross and finish. 1-1 78 mins gone.
Our skipper Louis Offer leapt into a tackle and the Ref pulled out a Red card, after that it was backs to the wall and a clever finish from their winger in the 90th minute ended our journey this time around. 2-1 90 mins
Whistle blew shortly after and whilst the players had worked really really hard we had missed out on a replay, just.
Late winner was  a harsh lesson for our young team but can only hope they learn from it and use it as motivation going forward.
