Game 2 saw us make the short trip to Colney Heath. Another tough game and after just two games, a reminder of how competitive this league is. Every game is a battle and the margins are small.
The match at Colney Heath was exactly that, a battle. After the first 20 minutes we began to get down the sides and looked a threat. A mention for Lanre here who played the 9 position very well and every time the ball was played up, the home defence were looking for help from the referree. Lanre made life very uncomfortable for their centre halves.
After a period of pressure with corners and crosses into the box, Lanre broke down the left, out muscling the defender and after a short dribble fired a left footed cross low and hard and Josh got the run of the full back to slot home.
The second half was much of the same with the home side enjoying more of the ball without looking too threatening. One huge chance of note came when they managed to get behind our back line down our left to get a low cross into the box, forcing GK Tiernan to make a very good save. It looked a goal but a good change of direction and got down very quickly to keep the ball out and the defnce cleared. Other than this chance and a smart save from a free kick, Tiernan didn’t have lots to do outside of claiming crosses and enjoying himself with the odd diagonal ping.
We had a period in the second half where we looked like adding to our lead with successive corners and were camped in the last 3rd. A few times the ball wouldn’t fall nice for a Worm to get a clean strike on goal. Lanre went close a couple of times, Avto had a half chance and Brad had a shot go just wide. The attempts were building up.
The game clinching second goal was a thing of beauty. A free kick off 25 yards out. Tom Mulqueen whipped the ball over the wall and it went in off the post. If we want to see the goal from a couple of angles head over to our X account. https://x.com/WormleyRoversFC. It really was a thing of beauty.
Another tough, hard fought game but the Worms end up deserved winners.
For me, Ryan Stevenson was POTM. Played multiple positions on the night, always seem to be in the right positions to pick up loose balls or intercept their forward passes. Another shout out to the back 4 and Tiernan, they looked solid again, and another clean sheet. A mention for Lanre, was a presence and handful all night. Of course, Tom Mulqueen for the free kick – We look forward to seeing more of those this season.
