View from the Chair
Welcome everyone to The Lane for todays league encounter against AFC Welwyn who we have yet to play this season and on behalf of everyone at Wormley Rovers FC I would like to offer a warm welcome to their players officials and supporters. We should have played them in November but some ground issues meant the game was postponed.
A tough 1-0 loss two weeks ago at high flying Biggleswade Utd in a game our opponents created lots of chances and we could have got a draw in the end.
A hard fought 1-0 win last week vs Potton Utd with only 13 fit players was another strong home performance, that followed a previous home win vs table topping Kings Langley 3-0 was probably our best performance of the season and should give us confidence as head into the second half of the season knowing that on our day we can compete with the top teams in this league.
We continue to blood young talent in the squad at this level and will continue to do so in the hope these young players can start making their mark in the game here at Wormley Rovers and help to push us up the table. Welcome to Dren Hoti who made his debut for us last weekend and started with a clean sheet.
Thank you to all of our player sponsors who have stepped up again this season and we still have a few players and members of the management team available to sponsor.
Thank you to ALM who once again have sponsored the first team kit for the 20th year in a row which shows incredible support to the club, Thank you to Harrison Hayes who have sponsored the 1st team tracksuits and thank you to all of our pitch side sponsors who once again have stepped up this year to support the club.
Wishing everyone at the club and our opponents a happy and healthy new year.
Hope you enjoy the game and thanks for your support COYW.
Chair, Nigel Scully
AFC Welwyn was founded in 2023 by Tawhid Juneja and Richard James following the rebrand of the former Welwyn Garden City FC Development Team. The club was created with a clear vision: to build a progressive, community-focused football club with strong ambitions both on and off the pitch.
The club entered the Spartan South Midlands League Division Two for the 2023–24 season, beginning life at Step 7 of the English football pyramid. Playing initially at Herns Way, AFC Welwyn made an immediate impression, recording an 8–1 victory in their first-ever competitive fixture and going on to enjoy a remarkable debut season.
That inaugural campaign proved historic, as AFC Welwyn secured a league and cup double, winning the Division Two title and the Division Two League Cup. The momentum continued into the 2024–25 season, with the club achieving a second consecutive promotion by lifting the Division One title, reaching Step 5 in just two seasons.
For the 2025–26 season, AFC Welwyn compete in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, with first-team home fixtures currently played at Hemel Hempstead. Alongside on-field progress, the club continues to develop its structure, supporter involvement, and long-term plans for a permanent home within the Welwyn area.
Known as “The Romans”, AFC Welwyn take inspiration from the historic Welwyn Roman Baths, reflected in the club’s identity and motto, Sic Parvis Magna — Greatness from Small Beginnings.
