Welcome everyone to The Lane for todays league encounter against Baldock Town and on behalf of everyone at Wormley Rovers FC I would like to offer a warm welcome to their players officials and supporters.
Six games without defeat should be a cause for optimism with four wins and two draws in however anyone who has watched the games might be disappointed that it is not six wins from six games as it so easily could have been, a narrow 1-0 win against Kempston Rovers last weekend was not a true reflection of the game as we could and should have scored more however Monday nights game vs AFC Welwyn was a real scratch your head game as with 8 minutes remaining we were 2-0 down despite having a goal a metre over the goal line missed by the officials after 5 minutes, hitting the woodwork three times and dominating most of the game however two late goals sealed a draw and honestly if we had played another three minutes we would have gone on to win it, so we are in reasonable shape going into to today’s game. Having to play on a Monday night after a Saturday fixture is a joke in this league but that’s what happens when homeless clubs are allowed into the league.
We still have a big semi final to come on Tuesday albeit against FA Vase semi finalists Cockfosters so although a massive challenge we certainly have a chance of making a final in what has been a challenging season.
We continue to blood young talent in the squad at this level and will continue to do so in the hope these young players can start making their mark in the game here at Wormley Rovers and help to push us up the table.
Credit to Ryan, his team and the players in what has been a crazy season in this league we have shown on many occasions we can mix it with the best in this league without bankrupting the club.
Thank you to all our player sponsors who have stepped up again this season, and we still have a few players and members of the management team available to sponsor.
Thank you to ALM who once again have sponsored the first team kit for the 20th year in a row which shows incredible support to the club, Thank you to Harrison Hayes who have sponsored the 1st team tracksuits and thank you to all of our pitch side sponsors who once again have stepped up this year to support the club.
Hope you enjoy the game and thanks for your support COYW
Following the demise of the original Baldock Town FC in 2001 the new Baldock Town was formed in 2003 from Baldock Town Youth FC as an outlet for youth squads. The club played its first competitive match in September 2003 in the North Herts League at ‘The Shed’ on Clothall Road, Baldock. The match was against Magnum with a Rob Foster hat-trick sealing a 5-1 win. The club then progressed from the North Herts League to the Herts Senior County League (HSCL) where they won Div 1 in their debut season 2007/2008.
For three seasons from 2008 the team played its home matches at the County Ground, Letchworth but they returned to Baldock to play at their old ground in Norton Road, now known as the North Herts Arena.
After three near misses the club finally won the HSCL Premier Div title in 2012. Unfortunately, due to ground grading issues the club were unable to take their place in the Spartan South Midlands Football League (SSMFL).
In order to achieve its ambition of playing at the highest possible level the club was forced to move to ground share with Hitchin FC. The club finished in second place the following season and this proved to be good enough to secure that elusive promotion to the SSMFL. The team, at that time managed by former player Scott Grant, also won the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the first time and retained the Anagram Records Trophy.
The next two seasons saw a period of consolidation as they finished Jlh and 10th respectively, in SSMFL Div 1 (Step 6 on the Non-League pyramid). After three seasons at Hitchin the club moved to ground share with Stotfold FC. Luke Gregson then took over as manager in 2015, following Grant’s resignation, and assisted by Dean Gilbert the team then went on a superb run and ended up just missing out on promotion. The 3rd place finish was the highest placing in their recent history.
The 2017-18 season proved to be even more successful as Baldock Town continued to progress and finished second in Div 1 and were duly promoted to the SSMFL Premier Division. The team continued with its run of excellent form and finished in 5th place in their first season in the Premier Division. The following season Baldock managed to get to 12th position before the season was prematurely ended as Covid 19 started to take hold. Luke Gregson decided to step down at the end of that season and Adam Fisher took over as Manager, assisted by Rob Bates.
The club only managed 12 games in the 2020-21 season as the Covid-19 pandemic eventually won and the League was abandoned. Rob Bates took over as Manager during the summer of 2021 and started the season with some great Cup performances but failed to turn that into League form.
The last couple of seasons have been variable with Team development on-going. The Team currently ground share at Arlesey FC and are managed by Dave McAdam. Dave is a strong believer in youth development, and has put his faith in a number of our promising youngsters from our reserves and U18s.
The club continues to grow, running six teams, two at U13 and U14 in the Eastern Junior Alliance (EJA), another at U18 in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League (SCFYL), and a development side playing as Baldock Town Reserves in the Herts Senior County League (HSCL) Division One. The first team continues to play in the Spartan South Midlands Football League (SSMFL) Premier Division, and for the first time, the club has a women’s team this season. Baldock Town FC Ladies compete in the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire County Women’s Football League.
